The squadron's nickname, "Pukin' Dogs," originated in the 1950s after the squadron commander's wife remarked that the squadron’s insignia resembled a "pukin' dog." VFA-143 has participated in several high-profile deployments, including a 2010 seven-month mission with USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, earning the Wade McClusky Award for excellence. Their operations supported 5th and 6th Fleet missions, and in 2015, they deployed aboard USS Harry S. Truman for Operation Inherent Resolve, dropping a record-breaking number of precision-guided munitions. The squadron returned to NAS Oceana in July 2016 after a successful, extended deployment.
